We all love to go on holiday! – we work hard for the pleasure of being able to do so and it’s often an exciting time where families can get together and really just have some fun.
Coming home from a great trip abroad, camping with the kids or a romantic city break is always going to be gloomy. Proving you’ve had a great time of course; but if something serious has gone wrong in your home whilst you’ve been away it can be completely and utterly devastating. There are a few things that you can do in order to help ensure that this doesn’t happen though.
Ask someone who lives close by to just keep an eye on your home for you. Most people really won’t mind doing this and if you offer to do the same for them and pick up a bottle of wine to say thank you then it can actually turn out to be a really good arrangement. Do remember to tell them if you have someone looking after your home whilst you are away though. You don’t want them to be hyper vigilant and end up reporting a crime when it’s just a friend popping over to feed the cat!
Be careful where you broadcast the fact that your home is going to be empty. It might be tempting to post pictures of your hotel and a countdown on Facebook but do you really know who is looking at this information. Also consider the message you leave on your answer machine – Unless it’s absolutely necessary to broadcast that you are away and your home is empty try not to do it.
Do you close your curtains or leave them open? Some people are adamant that you should close your curtains in order to prevent would be thieves from peering in. Ideal in principle but that neighbour who has agreed to look after your house also can’t see if anything looks like it’s been moved or damaged. The best thing you can do is leave your curtains just as you would if you were home in order to avoid giving the game away that you’re on holiday. Just move any expensive items such as laptops and jewellery away from plain view.
Of course you can insure further peace of mind whilst you are away by looking into wireless and monitored alarm systems and possibly installing CCTV around your property, enabling YOU to keep an eye on your property wherever you are in the world!
